Can you hear us now EPA?

To The Editor:

The residents of Stratford (and the entire State of Connecticut) have spoken and the message is very clear!

"Consolidating" or dumping toxic Raymark Waste in residential neighborhoods is not acceptable and will soon be against the law in the state of Connecticut. The unanimous passage of The Environmental Justice Bill (#5145) last week by the Connecticut General Assembly clearly emphasizes this sentiment and we're hopeful that the EPA and State DEP are finally getting the message.

For the past 10 months, SaveStratford.org has been pushing both agencies to do the right thing for Stratford. We're not trying to stop them from doing their job (cleaning up the toxic waste). We're trying to get them to do their job in a better way - in a way that won't jeopardize residents' health and economic welfare. With some of the brightest scientific minds in the world, it behooves the EPA to come up with something better than spending millions of dollars to create a toxic waste dump in the middle of a residential neighborhood where people live and work and where their children play and go to school.

There is a better solution. We're asking people, including Congresswoman DeLauro, Senator Dodd and Senator Lieberman, to contaConnecticut the EPA's Administrator, Robert Varney, and impress upon him the need for the EPA to present a better, fully funded clean-up plan that removes all or as much of the toxic Raymark waste as possible from Stratford.

This is clearly the best long-term solution for the town of Stratford because it fixes the Raymark problem once and for all and ultimately makes this community a better place for all who live and work here.
